Can they be over two minutes? Can they be montage/abstract style as well as narrative?
In both cases, the answer is yes. However, once a sequence goes over 2 mins 30, there is a real danger that it runs out of steam and becomes a bit messy or confused (see the one scoring 27 below). On the other hand, there is some exceptional work of well over 3 minutes (like the one on 59 below), but that is rare. Advice to students should be to aim for 2 mins. The overwhelming majority come in between 1'45 and 2'30.
In terms of style, while for some candidates the chance to demonstrate continuity editing is the most important feature, for others a more abstract style is perfectly acceptable. The key is that it should be readable as an opening rather than, say, a trailer.
